Very likeable chap, Daniel, but his interview answers aren’t riveting. Not with a McLaren monitor at his elbow, at least. If he had role as tester for Mercedes, I wouldn’t fear his biases, but his trademark informality. He’s been central to a few team personnel events, as his team choices unraveled. The true resonance of those is untested like this. I think a trial is with a shot, Melbourne, Monaco, Montreal for sure, grinding it out in F1’s outposts….maybe not!26-10-2022 16:55

I'm Canadian, so F1 drivers aren't what we do, exactly. He's a nice, dimensional guy Latifi, and in such a position that F1 won't define his future economically. One of those professional amateurs, that populated the grid into the '90's. He just doesn't seem to have any affinity for, or confidence in, the F1 car he's contracted to drive. Part of the his issue in race craft, is perhaps the fact he doesn't believe a thing the car is telling him. Top drivers have a "the car is one with me" relationship, or have had as reference. The "zone" is a foreign place to Nicholas. Latifi's not really driven anything like good car in F1, and likely will not. I believe he suffers in the cockpit, from what a couple of professional ice hockey player's I know call.... "paralysis through analysis" ! De Vries is a natural, sure enough, golden moments come to those fated for them. He has an F1 race winner's look about him. Monza may flatter, it's a place where a low drag Williams is better suited, and a bit of attrition also.12-09-2022 17:44

Less than worshiped, perhaps, but regarded "terrible"....don't think that's true. He was in the era dominating package, in a less than deeply competitive period, arguing that one is fruitless. Made much of of it, some great drives, a decent bloke. 2022 form, just proves top shelf talent, needs a top shelf whole package to secure winning results.11-04-2022 17:47

It was a calamity in full ! The fact that F2 couldn't safely race there, was a pretty big flag for F1. Used to be a circuit, had to successfully host a ladder Formula race, somewhat in advance of a GP....and this proved that to be a lost wisdom ! The venue needs a significant revision, and its new date with no possibility of being a title influencing race proves appropriate. Verstappen races Hamilton precisely the way Hamilton races him , currently (Alonso excepted) the only driver to routinely do so. They both were heavy on elbow at points. The latter incident seems originated in the case that reportedly only one team relayed a ruling to their driver....was Merc remiss, or enabling an enticement. They seem to have to lost chord to the stewards violin, In just about any team sport, in championship crucial moments, officiating allows variance to ensure avoidance of "tit for tat" rulings. The current racing stewards seem to rule with what the Italian's call "Pignolo", officious abandon to be globally officious, but singularly spineless !06-12-2021 16:47

I believe it was virtually 50-50, but the car that's rides over, 99% will incur the blame ! This is the type of contact, the stewards should comment on, rather than their usual minutiae. Max did give a look at Lewis' cockpit, just to ensure there was natural movement in there, before striding away. I don't get Lewis' affront at the Turn 4, lap 1 moment, which contributed to trying to force Verstappen to bail here. (He'd usefully twisted Vettel, almost identically, a couple of years ago.) Here Max was presumptive, overly, and Lewis' block started at the end of the merge line.....had tears written all over it. Race results are much more interesting, when neither are involved..... Kudos to Danny Ric, this incident had no influence on his result....he'd nailed it. Nod also to the feisty Lando, during the sprint and the race.....McLaren belong in prime time.13-09-2021 17:39

Having watched motor racing since the mid-60's in all forms and series, I find the racing moment here not unfamiliar. This was a classic Dale Earnhardt Sr. (a most notable, but not only practitioner of the....er, art) dumping. "Ah shucks, ya'll know I jus' hate it for 'im!" Given the track knowledge and experience, every pilot knows "you don't make that move there..." without collateral shunt outcome percentage of a very high order. The challenging drivers here are both aces, but one is vastly more experienced at Silverstone and pushed prudence as such. Lewis didn't play two in the corner.... two coming out odds....and he's got the "in cockpit extra capacity" to be past the excuse of naivety. Maybe he didn't intend to wreck Max...but he didn't choose not to....and it was all there not to do !27-07-2021 03:37

Good bloke Danny Ric, he was similarly caring after Grojean's, and certainly the proper response after a big shunt under any circumstances! No matter who ends up in the fence....this scenario is a hollow first to the flag !19-07-2021 23:47

Masi seems over fond of the sound of his own voice ! Every race weekend has a ritual tablet reading from "on high!"07-06-2021 21:17

He had a young family coming, and wanted to participate in that. Seems to me Keke retired from F1 very soon after babies arrived too. Think Rob Walker mentioned discussing this with him, in one of his articles. Always thought NIco's diverse out of F1 interests were a bigger component for him, than most other F1 drivers.16-05-2021 16:55
